Computers & Network Access

The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library offers internet access for all library patrons from multiple computer stations throughout the library. On the library's first level (only in the reference area), the computers are equipped with additional software, from the Microsoft Office Suite:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Access
  • Microsoft PowerPoint

To use the computers with the above software installed, you must be a Tulane affiliate with a valid login and password (your Tulane email username and password). For more information on using computers at the library, please review the Computer Use Policy.

Laptops are available from the Circulation Desk for use within the library. These laptops have wireless internet access, Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc.). For more information, inquire at the Circulation Desk or call (504) 865-5689.

Wireless network access points are also available throughout the library. (At this time, the library does not offer wired, or Ethernet, access to users with their own laptops.) To use the wireless network, you will need:

  • A Tulane Technology account. Students, faculty, and staff should already have been assigned an account. Complete an application form if you don't have an account.
  • A wireless 802.11b-compliant Ethernet card. Tulane Infrastructure Services recommends that you purchase an Enterasys wireless Ethernet card. The Enterasys card is available at the Tulane Computing Center in the University Center. You can call them at 862-8059 to get more information on purchasing a card.
  • To register the MAC address of your wireless card on the TIS web site. The MAC address usually appears on the back of the card. The registration is done online, at your convenience, and you only have to do it once to use your computer anywhere the Tulane wireless network is available. To register, visit the TIS Wireless Project web site and click on the appropriate link.

How to Connect to the Wireless Tulane Network

TIS provides detailed instructions to help you connect your notebook or handheld computer to the wireless network. Go to the Wireless Project home page and follow the link for instructions. Answer three simple questions about your computer and card, and TIS will provide personalized instructions to help you install the drivers for your card, configure the card, and register its MAC address with TIS. You may also contact the TIS Help Desk at x8888 or 862-8888 (from 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM, Monday - Thursday, or from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Friday).
