Post-Katrina Donations and Gifts
At the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, Hurricane Katrina cost us not only our basement collections, but also future use of the basement itself for collections. This has left us with a shortage of shelving space overall on our upper floors. Also, we have had to reorganize the library with a reduction in staff, including staff for processing. Despite these challenges, we have every intention of rebuilding collections lost, even creating stronger ones than before.
We welcome the offer of valuable donations that will help us toward this end. But with the challenges described above, we will need to work with donations methodically.
Guidelines for Individual Donors
Individuals wishing to help are asked to first consider making a financial contribution rather than offering general materials. This would assist us in purchasing new materials through our normal vendors who can also supply the cataloging records to go with these items. See the online form for making a library pledge or gift or call Tulane University Gift Accounting toll free at 800-933-6886.
Individuals wishing to make donations of valuable materials that will clearly support the Tulane curriculum should contact the bibliographer associated with the appropriate subject area for more information about doing so.
General Guidelines for Gifts
Potential donors should also consult our general guidelines on making gifts to the library and for information on the types of materials generally sought as well as those generally not accepted.
Guidelines for Libraries
Libraries wishing to help us by donating materials also should consider that because of space and processing concerns we can accept only materials that will clearly support the Tulane curriculum, rather than general discards. Also, the best gifts would be those that include accompanying title lists. To inquire about donations of government documents or microforms contact Eric Wedig, Chief Bibliographer for Social Sciences and Government Publications, at 504-865-5644. To inquire about donations of music materials contact Lisa Hooper, head of the Music & Media Center, at 504-314-7822.
Guidelines for Publishers
Publishers will be able to help us greatly by donating new materials for the areas in which we suffered losses or by offering deep discounts for new purchases. Interested publishers or vendors should contact Andy Corrigan, Associate Dean for Library Collections, at 504-865-5679.
