Dublin Core

Title

Commission issued by President Thomas Jefferson to William C.C. Claiborne

Description

William C. C. Claiborne was the first non-colonial governor of Louisiana. Claiborne was integral in Louisiana's transition from a French colony, to a territory of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase, as well as its eventual admission as the 18th state. This gubernatorial commission, authorized by Thomas Jefferson and witnessed by James Madison, officially documents Claiborne's service as Governor of Louisiana.
