How do I check out a laptop?

You must first fill out a Laptop Loan Agreement Form at the Circulation Desk. Every time you check out a laptop you must have at least two (2) forms of ID. We will accept:

How long do I get to check out a laptop?

Laptops may be checked up to four (4) hours at a time. If no one else needs the laptop it may be renewed for another four hours. Laptops are available on a first-come first-serve basis. No holds or recalls may be placed on a laptop. Laptops will not circulate one hour prior to closing. They must be returned one half hour prior to closing. Laptops may not be removed from the library. They may not be taken past the glass doors in the main entrance or to the snack lounge in the basement.

What kind of laptop will I get and what comes with it?

You will get a Dell Latitude C640. The laptop comes with a battery, USB ports, DVD-RW drive, a power cord, a wireless network card, a folder with information and a laptop bag. The laptop battery will be charged when you check the laptop out. The laptop has pre-loaded licensed software including: MS Office XP Pro package (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.05, Netscape, Internet Explorer, Telnet, WinZip, WS_FTP, and Uniprint (network printing software). Please note: the library does not provide assistance in using the software. Users are expected to be proficient in the use of Microsoft software.

Now that I have the laptop, what do I do?

  1. The Windows logon will appear. The user name already supplied is laptop. No password is necessary. All you will need to do is hit the Enter key or click on OK to logon to the laptop.
  2. The library is setup for wireless Internet. If you have difficulty accessing the Internet you may need to move to another area of the building. You can check the wireless connectivity by clicking on the wireless icon at the bottom, right hand side of the taskbar.

How do I print from my laptop?

Laptops come loaded with the Pharos software. To print you will need your Tulane ID

How do I save documents?

You can save documents to a flash drive or burn them to a CD-ROM. Please remember to backup your work, because the laptops will erase all data once they are turned off. The Library is not responsible for any personal files left on the laptop or any viruses that may be transferred to or from your diskette.

If you need a floppy disk you can buy one from the Circulation Desk for $1.00 or you can buy a CD-ROM for $2.00

Once I am done with the laptop, what do I do?

Please remember to return the laptop prior to the time it is due to avoid overdue fees.

What am I responsible for when I use a laptop?

You are responsible for the laptop and its peripherals. NEVER leave the laptop unattended, not even to go to the restroom!!! If it is stolen, you will be charged a replacement fee. Never loan it to another person because you will still be held responsible for the it.
