Research: Social Work Research Guide & Bibliography
Compiled by Stephen Fowlkes
Revised,
August, 2007
Doing in-depth research in the field of Social Work requires the use of many different sources of information. The purpose of this Guide is to provide a bibliography of reference sources for research in Social Work and related fields available in the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, and to help link the researcher to resources available elsewhere as well. It should be noted that the Tulane University Libraries has a separate bibliography of Sociology Reference Sources, and there is some duplication of these sources here.
Beginning Your Research
There are a number of published guides to research methods and materials useful for Social Work and related fields. A selected list of these appears below in Section I.
Following, in Section II, is a list of dictionaries and encyclopedias; and in Section III, a list of topical handbooks & research guides, which are all excellent starting points for research. They can provide the researcher with introductory information, definitions of unfamiliar or specialized terms, and extensive bibliographies of other relevant sources.

IV. Journal Indexing & Abstracting Services
Journal literature is consulted to locate the most current research and
information on a subject, especially if the subject is new, currently being
investigated, or subject to frequent change. Journal literature references are
best located by using indexing and abstracting services, most of which are available online via the Library's web site. The services and databases listed below are searchable by author,
title, subject, or keyword to locate references to articles in hundreds of
different professional and scholarly journals. Also, most of the following indexing and abstracting databases are listed
on the H-T Library's web page under "Databases at Tulane."
PLEASE NOTE:
After using indexes to identify citations to journal articles, there are several different options for locating the text of the articles. The next step should be to look for the green "TU-Link" icon in the citation, which will indicate whether full-text, electronic copy is available. If it is not available, the "TU-Link" page will give you the option of searching the Library Catalog to check for the article's availability in the Library's print collections.
Ask at the Reference & Information Desk for further help with locating the articles and other publications identified from your search of indexing and abstracting databases.
If the Tulane Libraries do not provide access to the journals that you need, ask at the Reference Desk about various ways to obtain articles from other library collections, including the Interlibrary Loan Service.
The following indexing and abstracting services are recommended for searching the journal literature in Social Work and related fields. Unless otherwise noted, they can be accessed via the H-T Library's web page: click on "Databases at Tulane."

XII. Selected Library Departments and Services
[See the HT Library web page for a complete listing of library departments and services: www.library.tulane.edu]
Reference Services Department
- This department provides a variety of services aimed at assisting library users in all stages of the research process. The Department operates the Reference and Information Desk on the 1st floor of the Howard-Tilton Library, and this is the department's primary service point. Reference staff and librarians at the desk are available for brief help on an as-needed basis most hours that the library is open. Additionally, reference librarians are available for more in-depth help or for research consultations by appointment. (Call 865-5605 for more information.) Stephen Fowlkes is the bibliographer and library liason to the School of Social Work, and works several hours per week at the reference desk. He can be reached by phone in the library at (504) 314-7869, or by e-mail at fowlkes@tulane.edu.
Collections & Information Services
- Librarians from several different library departments select books, journals, and other materials for the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library's collections. Tulane faculty, staff and students are welcome to make comments, suggestions, or requests concerning the addition of materials to the Library's collections. However, all decisions to add or withdraw materials will ultimately be made by the appropriate collection development Librarian, in concert with the faculty liason for the academic department on campus served by the collection. Stephen Fowlkes (314-7869; fowlkes@tulane.edu) is the Librarian responsible for selecting materials for the General Reference Collection, and for the library's circulating collections supporting Sociology and Social Work. In the School of Social Work, the library liaison is Dean Ron Marks (865-5314). For a list of all librarians responsible for selecting materials in other subject areas, see the Library's web site.
General Reserves
- The library supports 2 types of "reserve" materials: hard-copies of printed publications and online access to other publications, (known as "ERes). Hard copies of books, journals and other materials may be placed on reserve by professors, and these are kept at the Reserve Desk, which is adjacent to the Circulation ("Check Out") Counter on the first floor of the H-T Library. By clicking on the "Reserves" tab on the library's web page you can obtain call numbers for printed reserve materials, and can access electronic-reserve items as well. Reserve loan periods vary from one hour to three days, and overdue fines are higher, since these materials need to be used by a large number of people.
Access Services Department
Circulation Desk
- Also referred to as the "Check out" desk, this is where books can be checked out, renewed and returned. Other services provided at this desk include searching for library materials that cannot be located on the shelves, and recalling materials that are checked out to other library users. Call 865-5689 for more information.
Inter-Library Loan
- Tulane students, faculty, and staff needing research materials not owned by the Tulane Libraries may request those items through the Inter-Library Loan (ILL) Department. Books, journal articles, and other materials will be located and obtained, at no charge. The ILL service utilizes the Illiad online ILL system. Materials must be requested online, via the Library's homepage. Use this link to log onto the system and to request materials. Requested materials can take from 3 days to 3 months to arrive, depending on a number of factors. Library patrons will be notified when their materials arrive; all materials are picked up at the Circulation Desk in Howard-Tilton. Call 865-5610 for more information.
Borrowing Card for Other College & University Libraries in Louisiana
- All Tulane graduate students and faculty are elligible for a "LaLinc" card, which allows them to borrow books directly from all participating LaLinc libraries within the state of Louisiana. These cards may also be requested at the Circulation Desk.

Internet Resources For Social Work
- The Internet offers a huge amount of data, networking and other information useful in all fields of study and research. Relevant to Social Work research, these resources include links to academic, governmental, and professional organizations' web pages, connections to library catalogs and databases, e-mail and online networking groups. It should be noted that most published scholarly and academic literature is not available via "open-access" [i.e., for free] on the Internet. Instead, most of these types of publications, and the index/databases that list them, are available by paid subscription, and the H-T Library provides you this type of access to them.
- Listed below is a bibliography of publications dealing with use of the Internet for academic research, and following that is a list of websites that should be good starting points for Social Workers to find both useful information and forums for exchanging ideas with other people in the field. This list does not attempt to be exhaustive but is intended to provide a sampling of several broadly-focused Web sites that will lead the researcher to many more-detailed listings of information useful for research and practice in the field of social work.
Brief Bibliography
- Serious researchers need to familiarize themselves with all aspects of Internet searching. The following bibliography lists several recent articles and a number of research guides which focus on how best to use the Internet for scholarly and other research. Following the bibliography is a brief list of links that should be good starting places for exploring the vast array of research information dealing with social work available on the web.
