Uniquely, netLibrary is a commercial provider of online versions of current scholarly and academic press books, as well as trade books for academic libraries. The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library's netLibrary ebook collection is shared with other libraries in a consortium called SOLINET. This group purchase arrangement allows us to offer students and faculty access to more than 57,000 netLibrary e-books, covering a broad range of disciplines, under short but renewable "borrowing periods." The netLibrary ebooks are also linked individually in the library's Local Catalog.

The sources below provide access to thousands of ebooks.

Alex: Catalog of Electronic Texts on the Internet Begun in 1994, the collection includes items from American literature, English literature, and Western philosophy. Search features allow you to look for specific titles and to search the content of texts.

American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana Digital Archive Backfile - This is a vast digital collection patterned after Joseph Sabin's monumental Bibliotheca Americana, which attempted list all materials published about the New World between 1500-1926.  It consists of works about the Americas published not only in the United States but also from across the globe: 29,000 titles with more than 6 million pages of text.

Bartleby Library - An easy-to-use collection ranging from Emily Dickinson to F.Scott Fitzgerald to Virginia Woolf. Features American and English Poetry from 1250 to 1920.

Classical Scores Library (Alexander Street Press) - Includes more than 800 scores (approx. 25,000 pages) of in-copyright material from Boosey and Hawkes and selected material from the University Music Editions microfilm series. 49 composers' works are included in this release, including notable 20th- century composers.

Credo Reference (formerly Xreferplus) - More than 175 reference books, such as dictionaries, thesauri, and encyclopedias, from more than 30 respected publishers.

Early American Fiction (1789-1850) and (1850-1875) - This collection is an ongoing collaboration between ProQuest Information and Learning and the University of Virginia Library. In 1996 University of Virginia Library received a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to digitize and publish its unique collections of early American fiction. The result accessible in this collection includes 886 volumes by 136 authors, plus 199 manuscript items and 124 non-text images.

Early English Books Online (EEBO) - Contains about 100,000 titles listed in Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640) and Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700), as well as the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661) collection and the Early English Books Tract Supplement.

Ebrary Sheet Music Collection - A collection including thousands of additional music scores primarily focusing on classical works.

Editions-en-Ligne - This is a collection of online editions of about 400 volumes on France and the Renaissance, fully indexed and searchable. It is updated twice a year (about six new volumes added per category within the collection) and is intended to include the most important works on this time period.

Eighteenth Century Collection Digital Archive Backfile - This is the largest digital archive of scholarly material available, with more than 138,000 titles and editions (over 155,000 volumes) published between 1701 and 1800. It claims to deliver every significant English- language and foreign-language title printed in Great Britain during the 18th century, along with thousands of important works from the Americas. The project allows for full-text searching of more than 26 million pages of material, providing research opportunities in ways previously unavailable within an enormous range of data spanning all disciplines.

Electronic Text Center (University of Virginia) - This collection includes approximately 45,000 humanities texts in twelve languages as well as 50,000 related images. Strengths of the collection are Early American fiction and Shakespeare resources.

Elsevier Ebook 2007 Subject Collection (Mathematics) - This collection features 183 important monographs and reference works from one of the world's leading scientific publishers, all of them online and part of the ScienceDirect platform.

Elsevier Ebook 2007 Subject Collection (Neuroscience) - Similar to the collection above, this one, also on the ScienceDirect platform, features more than 100 critical works in Neuroscience.

Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans (1639-1800) - Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800 has been called a definitive resource for researching 17th- and 18th-century America. It is said to include nearly every book, pamphlet and broadside published in America over a 160-year period. Digitized from one of the most important collections ever produced on microform, Early American Imprints, Series I is based on Charles Evans' American Bibliography and Roger Bristol's supplement. Including more than 36,000 printed works and 2.3 million pages, this digital collection has imprints not available in microform editions.

Early American Imprints, Series II: Shaw-Shoemaker (1801-1819) - This resource provides a comprehensive set of American books, pamphlets and broadsides published in the early part of the 19th century. It is based on the noted American Bibliography, 1801-1819 by Ralph R. Shaw and Richard H. Shoemaker. With more than four million pages from over 36,000 items it includes 1,000 newly catalogued items unavailable in previous microform editions. It the essential complement to Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800, listed above.

The Online Books Page - Founded in 1993, the collection has over 9,000 listings searchable by author, title, or subject. Journal titles are also included in this broad, diverse collection.

Oxford English Dictionary - The Oxford English Dictionary Online is the world's leading authority on the history and development of the English language since 1150. This online edition provides access to the wealth of material contained in the 20-volume OED and more.

Oxford Reference Online - Another collection of reference works, mainly dictionaries, covering all the disciplines. Also includes quotation sources, who's who references, handbooks, and guides.

Oxford Text Archive - Since 1976, the Oxford Text Archive has sought to identify, collect, and preserve scholarly electronic texts across the humanities disciplines. A leader in electronic preservation, the collection contains over 2,500 resources in 25 languages.

Perseus Digital Library - Based at Tufts University, the Perseus Digital Library offers a definitive collection of electronic resources concerning the ancient world. Major strengths include art and archaeology as well as guides for teachers using Perseus in the classroom.

Project Gutenberg - Started in 1971, Project Gutenberg aims to make information, books, and other materials available to the general public. A highly accessible collection, the Project Gutenberg Library contains such titles as Alice in Wonderland and Paradise Lost as well as almanacs, dictionaries, and a set of encyclopedia.

SpringerLink - Our Springer eBook Collection includes cover-to-cover digital copies of all 11,000 book publications from this venerable science, technical and medical publisher for the years 2005, 2006, and 2007. These works include monographs, monographic series, collected works, handbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and a variety of other specialized reference titles. These ebooks are created with features tailored for use by serious researchers and scientists. The collection is divided into 12 subject specific "Online Libraries " for areas that include: Architecture, Design and Arts; Behavioral Sciences; Biomedical & Life Sciences ; Business & Economics; Chemistry & Material Science; Computer Science; Earth & Environmental Science; Engineering; Humanities, Social Sciences & Law; Mathematics; and Medicine.

Teatro Espanol del Siglo de Oro - Teatro Espanol del Siglo de Oro contains hundreds of digitalized important original works from The Golden Age (1500-1700), the crowning glory of Spain's intellectual and artistic achievements.

Universal Library Million Book Collection - Designed to be a modern day version of the Library of Alexandria, the Universal Library contains digitized versions of texts going back to the 15th century. The long term goal of the Million Book Project is for this collection to one day contain every published work in existence. Currently, there are over 1.5 million books in this collection.

Virtual Reference Library - Gale's Virtual Reference platform supplies access to useful online versions of standard, current reference sources such as dictionaries and subject encyclopedias. Newly purchased for the library are more than 20 of these important reference titles.
