Below is a list of off-site guides to help you cite sources and help you research and write more effectively. For specific citation questions, see one of our reference librarians or call the reference desk at 504.865.5606.


Basic citation guides (APA, APSA, CBE/CSE, Chicago, MLA, Turabian)



APA (American Psychological Association) - As a general rule, use APA style in psychology, education, and other social sciences.

APSA (American Political Science Association) - a modification of the Chicago Manual of Style for political scientists.

CBE/CSE (Council of Biology Editors, now the Council of Science Editors) - usually used to reference biology and medical sources.

  • CBE Documentation from the Writing Center of University of Wisconsin-Madison - describes two systems of documentation, the citation-sequence system and the name-year system

Chicago (University of Chicago Press) - used with all non-academic publications, such as popular magazines, newspapers, etc.

MLA (Modern Language Association) - As a general rule, use MLA style in literature, arts, and humanities.

Turabian (University of Chicago Press) - Except for a few minor differences, the Turabian style is the same as The Chicago Manual of Style 14th ed.
