Program Description

Education is the essential work of Tulane University as is reflected in its mission statement. All faculty who teach are involved in this enterprise, as are a wide range of professional, technical, and support personnel working in areas such as administration, libraries, instructional development, network infrastructure, fundraising, student services, athletics, and physical plant. In addition, Tulane has a new Teacher Preparation and Certification Program (TPCP). Tulane students in the program choose major and minor courses offered throughout the university then select their choice of dance (k-12), primary education, or secondary education teaching areas. Education courses offered at Tulane include EDLA 2000 Education in a Diverse Society, EDLA 2890 Service Learning, EDUC 3400 Classroom Management, as well as a range of courses in teaching methods. Student Teaching or internship (EDUC 6900 or EDUC 6950) is completed after graduation. The program, which is part of Newcomb-Tulane College, leads to a teaching certificate from the State of Louisiana, which can be used to obtain certification in other states through recipricol arrangements. The program has a full time director, assistant director, assessment and accreditation coordinator, three professors of practice as well as two adjunct lecturers. Through its Psychology Department Tulane offers a major in Psychology and Early Childhood Education that requires students to take education courses. Tulane's Newcomb College has long been a pioneer in early childhood education through its Newcomb Children's Center, which is run as a working laboratory by faculty, staff, and students. Within the Center, the Newcomb College Nursery School offers half-day sessions to New Orleans children and the Newcomb Child Care Center has been offering day care since 1980.

Important works relevant to instructional design, instructional technologies, teaching methods, and important areas in higher education are sought. Specific descriptors applied to selected materials may include: pedagogy, educational philosophy, educational research, economics of education, educational costs, comparative education, educational sociology, multicultural education, community & schools, school integration, pre-college education (general), pre-school education, elementary education, secondary education, curriculum studies (general), college & university education (general), graduate education, college students, college graduates, private colleges, English as a second language, methods of study (general), distance education, open learning, multicultural literacy, technology literacy and educational leadership. Tulane's Teacher Certification Program has a curriculum focus on teaching methods, curriculum design, and classroom management for grades PK-3 and 7-12 and for Dance grades K-12.


The library collects journals, monographic series, monographs, and specialized reference works. Other types--including works addressed to a popular, nonscholarly audience or instructional recordings--are considered selectively. Examples of curriculum materials for pre-college grades are no longer collected.


To broaden accessibility, journals are sought online when this format is available. Print may be cancelled to reduce costs when ownership of the online version is assured. Online access that requires additional costs with a print subscription will be sought selectively within the amount budgeted for psychology journals. Monographs and other types are generally purchased as printed text. Other formats are considered, especially when the alternative format would improve access or utility.


English is sought. Materials in other languages are considered selectively.

Chronological Period

Emphasis is on current research. Historical material in this area is considered selectively.

Imprint Date

Preference is given to items published within the last two or three years and items with older imprint dates are sought selectively. Out-of-print materials are sought selectively, mostly to replace important older works damaged or missing from the collection.

Geographical Considerations

North America is most commonly represented. Materials focusing on other geographic areas are considered selectively.

Cooperative Resources

The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is one of 14 members of a cooperative consortium of southern research libraries called KUDZU, which includes a shared online catalog. Loan requests through this system receive priority processing and expedited two-day delivery. The library is also a member of the cooperative Center for Research Libraries (CRL) in Chicago, through which we may borrow a wide range of rare materials for our users. Undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty may borrow materials directly from the main library nearby at Loyola University of New Orleans through a reciprocal agreement called TU/LU. Graduate students and faculty may borrow materials at other New Orleans area academic libraries, and at other academic libraries throughout the state, through the LALINC consortium. Supply Sources

The library maintains a modest approval plan through GOBI Library Solutions for education books that is limited to the scope described above, this in addition to a small discretionary fund for important monographs outside the scope of this plan. While the library owns many individual journal subscriptions, a large number of articles from education journals are available through the library's subscriptions to large general "aggregator" article databases.

Endowed Funds

The library has no endowed funds for education at this time.

Reviews such as those from Choice, review journals, notification slips received from GOBI Library Solutions, occasional slips from foreign vendors, and recommendations from faculty, staff, and students.
