Program Description

The History Department is primarily committed to undergraduate teaching, but also offers M.A., M.A.T., and Ph. D. degrees. Major areas of emphasis, with graduate as well as undergraduate offerings, are the United States (particularly the southern U. S., including New Orleans and Louisiana), Latin America, Europe (ancient, medieval, modern, and recent), Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Within these geographic concentrations individual faculty members offer courses on a wide range of topical fields: political, military, economic, social, intellectual and cultural (including the study of popular culture). Women's history, gender in history, and the history of the family are also offered. The department employs 21 faculty members. It has 14 associated faculty.

The History collection supports African Diaspora, American Studies, Medieval Studies, Political Economy, and Russian Studies programs.

Affiliated Programs
  • African and African Diaspora Studies Program: The Program Director and Faculty Liaison is Filipe Smith, Ph. D. The Program in African and African Diaspora Studies offers students an interdisciplinary course of study that may lead to either a Major or a Minor. Both the Major and the Minor are designed to enable students a considerable degree of freedom in the choice electives and they both offer ample avenues for students interested in pursuing independent research and/or internship experiences. The Program supports students who choose to study the languages of Africa and its Diaspora and is particularly interested in encouraging the study of less commonly taught languages such as Yoruba, Kiswahili, Arabic and Haitian Creole. The Program also encourages students to pursue Study Abroad opportunities in Africa and its Diaspora and advises them in all matters pertaining to such study. The option to write an Honors thesis is available both to students who are in the University's Honors Program as well as to those who seek Honors within the ADST Program.
  • American Studies: The Program Director and Faculty Liaison is Teresa Toulouse, Ph. D. American Studies is an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental major which provides an analysis of American thought, culture, and society, past and present. Current emphases include the city, the environment, and technology. The oldest interdisciplinary program at Tulane, American Studies draws on the teaching and research offerings of twenty-five faculty in several academic departments, e.g., English, History, Political Science, Architecture, Anthropology, Art, Communications, and Music.
  • Russian Studies: The Program Directors for Russian Studies are Samuel Ramer and William Brumfield. A major in Russian Studies consists of two years of Russian language plus nine courses selected from a variety of areas and offered primarily by the departments of Art, History, English, and Political Science.

Emphasis is on general, popular, and scholarly works treating the geographic and topical areas listed in the program description above. Collection policies for history, political science, economics, religion, communications, American studies, African/Diaspora studies, Jewish studies, Asian studies, and women's studies intertwine and reinforce each other.


Monographs, monographic series, specialized reference works, bibliographies, and serials are collected. Textbooks, non-Tulane dissertations, and audio-visuals are considered selectively on request.


To broaden access and conserve physical space journals are sought online whenever this format is available. Print may be cancelled to reduce costs when ownership of the online version is assured. When ownership of the online version is not assured, online access at additional cost will be sought within the amount budgeted for history journals. Monographs and other types are generally purchased as printed text. Other formats are considered, especially when the alternative format would improve access or utility.


English and limited numbers of French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Russian titles are acquired. The library seeks to collect critical monographs and source materials in the original languages of the various non-English speaking cultures taught in the history curriculum.

Chronological Period

The period covered includes C3000BC-2000AD, with emphasis on 1500-2000AD.

Imprint Date

Emphasis is placed on items published during the last three years. Older materials are selectively purchased. Out-of-print materials are sought to replace lost materials considered indispensible to the collection, or upon faculty request.

Geographical Considerations

Emphasis is on the Americas, Britain, Ireland, and Europe, with limited worldwide coverage.

Cooperative Resources

The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is one of 14 members of a cooperative consortium of southern research libraries called KUDZU, which includes a shared online catalog. Loan requests through this system receive priority processing and expedited two-day delivery. The library is also a member of the cooperative Center for Research Libraries (CRL) in Chicago, through which we may borrow a wide range of rare materials for our users. Undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty may borrow materials directly from the main library nearby at Loyola University of New Orleans through a reciprocal agreement called TU/LU. Graduate students and faculty may borrow materials at other New Orleans area academic libraries, and at other academic libraries throughout the state, through the LALINC consortium. These include YBP, Jean Touzot, Casalini, Puvill, and Harrassowitz approval plans.

Endowed Funds

Funds include the Selley Fund (European studies since 1750), Lurcy Fund (French culture), Carter Memorial Fund (United States history), Benjamin Fund ( Southern history), Gibson Fund (History general) and the Mintz Fund (Holocaust studies).

Selection Tools

Selection tools include the approval plans listed above, reviews in Choice and major professional journals, e.g., American Historical Review, Journal of Southern History, and Journal of Southern History. Special attention is given to faculty, staff, and student requests.
