Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC) announces the processing and finding aid publication of the following collections of the Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz:
Al and Doris Kershaw collection of George Lewis Band correspondence and ephemera (HJA-105)
This collection consists of correspondence and ephemera documenting the performances and travels of the George Lewis Band of New Orleans, including letters from musicians and business associates, as well as concert materials such as tickets, programs, and notes. Collected by the Reverend Al Kershaw and Doris Kershaw, whose home hosted the band during Midwest and Northeast tours, the materials also reflect the broader personal and professional network surrounding the group between 1952 and 1972.
George “Kid Sheik” Colar collection (HJA-068)
This collection documents New Orleans-born trumpeter and bandleader George Colar (1908–1996), known as “Kid Sheik” and “Kid Cola." Materials dating from approximately the 1940s through the 1990s include photographs, correspondence, handwritten music, and ephemera related to his work with groups such as the Olympia Brass Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, as well as the broader New Orleans jazz community.
