Campus Film Screenings

Media Services and Tulane University Libraries is excited to partner with student organizations, faculty, programs, schools, and other campus units to support campus film screenings. Learn more below about co-hosting and sponsorship options.

Regardless of how you choose to partner with us, we simply ask that you include the library's logo in your marketing material if you used a film from the Tulane Libraries collection. Please email mediaservices@tulane.edu to start the conversation.

Co-Hosting and Sponsorship Levels

Co-Host

As a co-host, Media Services can:

  • Help identify films in our collections that meet your interest(s);
  • Purchase or license the film you would like to screen whenever possible (please note, due to demand, the library is not able to purchase one-time only screening licenses);
  • Collaboratively design and plan related programming (example: panel discussion, post-screening Q & A, facilitated discussions, etc.);
  • Collaborate on marketing and outreach.

Sponsor

As a sponsor, Media Services can:

  • Help identify films in our collections that meet your interest(s);
  • Purchase or license the film you would like to screen whenever possible (please note, due to demand, the library is not able to purchase one-time only screening licenses).
Find Eligible Films

Before using films from the Library's collection for a campus screening, please make sure it has Public Performance Rights (PPR).

The Library provides access to the following streaming platforms that include films with PPR:

  • Academic Video Online. All films on the platform with the exception of titles on the Film Platform label may be used in campus screenings so long as there is no entrance fee.
  • Kanopy. Some but not all titles on Kanopy are covered by PPR. Use the search box to find films on your topic then filter to only see films with PPR.
  • Docuseek2. All titles in Docuseek2 are eligible for campus screenings when screenings meet the following conditions: no entrance fee, Tulane affiliates only, no event advertising outside the learning community.
  • Digitalia Film Library. Digitalia Film Library is a Multi-language film library of streaming videos. The Library subscribes to the Latin American Collection only.

Since many films in our streaming collections are only available to us with 1 or 3-year licenses, we strongly recommend notifying Media Services with your intention to screen a film so we can renew the license as needed.

If you would like to host a screening using a DVD from the Library's collection, please inquire about PPR status by emailing mediaservices@tulane.edu.

Can I Screen Films from Commercial Platforms?

We strongly recommend reading your user agreement with any commercial platform before you become too invested in screening one of their films.

Your personal accounts to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and other commercial streaming platforms generally prohibit campus screenings.

Netflix maintains a limited "education collection" that allows campus screenings of a title only once per semester. Visit the Netflix Help page for the most current guidance.

If there is a film on a commercial platform that you would like to screen, Media Services can try to acquire the film for the library's collection as well as an appropriate screening license; however, films typically have an exclusive distribution agreement with these commercial platforms so the success rate is exceedingly low.

Resources for Registered Student Organizations

Student Affairs has additional resources and services to support film screenings organized by Registered Student Organizations (RSOs).

  • RSO's must register their movie screening and provide rights information through WaveSync.
  • If your RSO has funding to purchase PPR, Student Affairs can facilitate purchasing through the university's approved rights distributor.

Visit the RSO Handbook pages for Event Planning & Registration to get all the details that will make your event a success.
