Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library collects materials in support of teaching and research in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The department offers a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. The undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The department has about ten full time faculty members and thirty-five graduate students. Areas of emphasis within the department include advanced materials, biomolecular engineering, and environmental technologies. Research focuses on nanoscale materials, polymers, composite materials, catalytic materials, and bioinspired materials; gene delivery, cell & tissue culture, and targeted drug delivery; and environmental remediation. The department is also home to TIMES, the Tulane Institute of Macromolecular Engineering and Science.

The collection emphasizes chemical and biomolecular engineering in general as well as areas of emphasis within the department including nanoscale engineering and nanotechnology, polymer engineering and science, composite materials, catalytic materials, bioinspired materials, gene delivery and cellular engineering, cell and tissue culture, targeted drug delivery, and environmental remediation technology.
The library collects monographs, monographic series, reference books, and periodicals, with the main focus being the journal collection. Upper level textbooks are purchased selectively. Textbooks used in current courses are not acquired. Symposium and colloquium proceedings are bought upon request, except for the AIChE Symposium Series, which is part of our American Institute of Chemical Engineers subscription. The library does not generally collect theses or dissertations by authors other than Tulane students. Selected engineering standards are collected. Videorecordings may be purchased upon request of faculty members.
To broaden accessibility, journals are sought online when this format is available. Print may be cancelled to reduce costs when ownership of the online version is assured and the image quality is adequate. Online access that requires additional costs with a print subscription will be sought selectively within the amount budgeted for biomedical engineering journals. Monographs and other types are generally purchased as printed text. E-books are considered, especially when that format would improve access or utility. Most scientific abstracting and indexing sources are available as databases searchable online. The library rarely maintains a subscription to both the print and the online version of an index.
English is the preferred language of publication, but some foreign language materials are collected at the request of the faculty.
Emphasis is on current research. Historical material of general interest in chemistry and chemical engineering are collected with the assistance of the deMilt Fund.
Preference is given to items published within the last two or three years. Items with older imprint dates are considered upon request. Out-of-print materials are sought mostly to replace important works damaged or missing from the collection.
No geographical limitations are applied.
The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library borrows a wide range of materials for our users through memberships in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) and the Center for Research Libraries (CRL). A reciprocal agreement called TU/LU allows undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty to borrow materials directly from the main library nearby at Loyola University of New Orleans. The LALINC consortium allows graduate students and faculty to borrow materials at other New Orleans area academic libraries and at other academic libraries throughout the state. Selected publications from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers are received through a subscription package plan. Books in support of the program are generally acquired at a discount through our vendor, which also delivers books based on an approval plan profile.
The Rooney Fund is available for research materials in chemical engineering. The Harrod Memorial Fund is also available to purchase materials in any area of engineering, while the Class of 1902 Fund may be used for books in any area of science. The deMilt Fund is available for materials in the history of chemistry.
