Each semester the Library hosts workshops designed to promote awareness, build skills, and educate the Tulane University community on issues associated with research and learning in the information age. We are committed to creating a welcoming, supportive, and engaging environment for everyone to learn and build research skills. All events are free and open to the greater university community.

Description:

ArcGIS Story Maps are a publicly-accessible format for communicating the results of your research, presenting historical narratives, and crafting place-based stories. In this workshop, you will learn how to design a web-based map narrative with sample geographic data, text, and images to build an interactive multimedia story map. 

This workshop is also offered on demand throughout the semester; to set up, schedule an individual, group, or course consultation with Sean Knowlton.

Requirements: This workshop will be in person, please bring a laptop.

Description:

Whether you want to express your thoughts, create art, or experiment with storytelling, this session will provide the perfect introduction to the world of zines. In the first hour, you'll dive into the fascinating history of radical self-publishing, exploring how zines have been used as a form of personal expression, political activism, and community building. We’ll also guide you through different zine styles and techniques from folds to staples, and show you how to access zine collections right here on campus.

In the final half hour, it’s your turn to get creative! With all materials provided, you’ll have the chance to design and produce your very own zine.

This will be a hybrid workshop- if you'd like to participate in the final half hour from home, you will need: 8.5"x11" paper, pens and markers, sissors, and any other fun materials you'd like (we'll have stickers, magazine clippings, ribbons, and more!)

Title: Finding the Forgotten: Discover Pre-20th Century Black New Orleans Through Digitized Primary Source Documents

Description:

I​​​​​​n this workshop, the presenter will introduce several significant collections of digitized historical materials pertaining to the history and experiences of Black people in New Orleans with a main focus on pre-20th century resources. Participants will learn how to navigate different interfaces and compose effective search queries using terminology that is most likely to return relevant search results. The first 40 minutes will allow participants to familiarize themselves with several different resources. In the remaining 20 minutes, participants will have time to conduct their own preliminary searches with support and troubleshooting guidance from the presenter. Participants will also be directed to a research guide containing additional, related resources that are not covered in the workshop. Note: Participants should bring a device (preferably a laptop or tablet) to the session
