To Bear Another Hue, an exhibit exploring race and representation in Shakespeare

This exhibit traces how characters from the African diaspora in Shakespeare’s plays have been represented over time. We begin with their key speeches as written by Shakespeare, pass through moments of erasure, appropriation, and racist tropes in the 19th and 20th centuries, and emerge in the late 20th and 21st centuries when these characters’ identities are reclaimed and presented from positions of strength and power.

Location: Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, 6th floor lobby

This exhibit was developed in coordination with the Folger Institute Workshop Rac(e)ing the Shakespearean Archive workshop co-hosted by The Department of Theatre and Dance the Department of English. Please join their upcoming public events.
