Getting Social with Archives

Archives Social Hour is a TUSC outreach event designed to give Tulanians and the regional community an opportunity to informally engage with archival materials and chat with TUSC staff. The fall 2023 edition is happening during Tulane’s Wave Weekend on Friday, October 20 from 2:30 - 3:30 pm.

The inaugural event was held in October 2022 during American Archives Month, and the second was in March 2022 with the theme “A Spring Fling.” Attendees visited the TUSC reading room and gallery and viewed small, curated displays; asked questions about collections; learned safe techniques to handle rare and unique materials; and even picked up some swag from Tulane Libraries and Newcomb-Tulane College, holiday treats, and archives-themed cookies. TUSC staff enjoyed introducing, or re-introducing, visitors to archives and special collections. While popular with faculty and staff, the event has especially made an impact on student attendees. A few even inquired about working in archives, leading to them being hired as TUSC student workers for the spring 2023 semester. The Archives Social Hour planning committee for the 2022-2023 academic year included Ann Case, Erin Kinchen-Addicks, Nix Mendy, Cate Peebles, Jennifer Waxman, and Melissa A. Weber. The 2023-2024 planning committee consists of Case, Kinchen-Addicks, and Weber. TUSC staff is looking forward to welcoming visitors again this month, and we hope to see you there!
