TUSC Commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the Desegregation of Tulane

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of Tulane University. In the spring, TUSC partnered with Tulane’s Black Student Union (tBSU) to mount an exhibition in the TUSC gallery that highlights and contextualizes Black student life at Tulane over those sixty years. “I Shall Not Be Moved”: Black Student Life at Tulane, 1963-2023”, features materials from Tulane University Archives and the Rare Books collection. The items on display were jointly selected by tBSU’s Executive Board and TUSC archivists and librarians.

This exhibition inspired the Tulane Desegregation Project, originally founded to commemorate the university’s 50th anniversary of desegregation, to stage an event in honor of the current anniversary during Homecoming weekend. Tulane Desegregation Project - Sixty Years Later: An Intergenerational Conversation about the Black Experience at Tulane is a panel discussion to be held on Friday, October 20 at 4:00 PM in Jones Hall, Room 204. Black alumni and administrators from past decades will discuss the reality of campus life with current students. The exhibition in Jones 201 will be open for viewing from 4-5:30 pm. All guests are invited to join The Multicultural Reception immediately following this panel event at 5:30 PM at the Carolyn Barber Pierre Center for Intercultural Life in the Richardson Building (Suite 101).
