Tulane’s Mister Speaker: Welcoming the Gingrich Congressional Collection

Tulane University Libraries is proud to open the Gingrich Congressional Collection, a landmark addition to the Louisiana Research Collection (LaRC) and a generous gift from the Gingrich family. Comprising more than 3,450 boxes and 4,032 linear feet, this extraordinary archive offers an in-depth view of the political career and legacy of Newt Gingrich (MA ’68, PhD ’71)—former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and one of Tulane’s most influential alumni.

Spanning two decades of congressional service, the collection includes campaign files, legislative records, media coverage, and correspondence with key political figures. It documents pivotal events such as the Contract with America, the Republican Revolution, and major legislation that helped define the political landscape of the late 20th century. The collection is now open to Tulanians and the public, and can be explored through this finding aid.

The successful transfer and launch of the collection was made possible by the tireless work of the Library’s Collection Management Team at the AnnexTulane University Special Collections (TUSC), and Library Administration, whose coordination and care ensured a seamless transition. We also gratefully acknowledge the University of West Georgia Library, which stewarded the collection for more than 40 years with great dedication and expertise.

The Gingrich Congressional Collection is a major addition to Tulane’s archival holdings, deepening our commitment to preserving the historical record and fostering scholarship across disciplines. Gingrich’s complex and consequential career reflects the kind of far-reaching impact Tulane alumni have made—and continue to make—in public life. We are honored to provide access to this collection and excited to support the new research, teaching, and conversations it will inspire.
