Our newest streaming film database: Academic Video Online

Six years ago, Tulane Libraries introduced its first interdisciplinary streaming film licensing resource with Kanopy. Since then, our collection of streaming film content has grown exponentially, with titles individually licensed not only from Kanopy, but also from Alexander Street Press, Criterion on Demand, Digital Theater+, Digitalia Film Library, Docuseek2, Films On Demand, and Swank Digital Campus.

Today we are thrilled to share our newest streaming film database: Academic Video Online

Not only is Academic Video Online, or AVON, a one-stop multidisciplinary source for thousands of feature films, documentaries, news reels, interviews, and performances, but it is also the exclusive distributor for some of our biggest labels including Sony Classic Pictures, Music Box Films, Mexican Film Institute, Ro*Co, CNN, Film Platform, PBS, and so much more.

Key Features:

  • Films may be embedded directly into Canvas Courses
  • Limited Public Performance Rights are automatically available for all films except Film Platform titles, permitting you to screen a film in public settings (no admissions) as well as in class
  • You can create customized clip libraries
  • Searchable transcripts are available for all films
  • Audio description is available for the most popular titles and being created for additional titles in the collection

Unlike our other streaming platforms, AVON is now available to the Tulane community as a subscribed database, which means no surprise license expirations for the duration of the subscription. We invite you to explore the entire AVON database or to visit any one of the many subject-based collections linked below for your convenience.

Although over 70,000 films are now available to you through AVON, this does not mean the end of access to our other streaming platforms. We recognize that each platform contains exclusive content and our goal, as ever, remains to ensure the entire Tulane community has access to the resources needed to succeed.

More information about all the video and audio streaming resources available through Tulane University Libraries may be found on the Streaming Resources Guide. Any questions, comments, or concerns about AVON or any other physical or streaming film resource, may be directed to lisa Hooper at lhooper1@tulane.edu or Media Services at mediaservices@tulane.edu.
