LAL Locations in Library Search

Latin American Library (LAL) books, journals, newspapers, pamphlets, and microforms are discoverable in Library Search. The table below details where and how to access all LAL items cataloged in Library Search.

Please note:

  • In the table below, LAL=Latin American Library; H-TML=Howard-Tilton Memorial Library
  • LAL archival collections are discoverable in a different database: ArchivesSpace.

Latin American Library (Open Stacks): The item is located in the LAL Open Stacks, H-TML 4th floor. The Open Stacks are available to the public whenever H-TML is open.

Tulane users can check out these materials at the Check-Out Desk, H-TML 1st floor.

Non-Tulane users can consult these materials in the library’s study spaces whenever H-TML is open.

Latin American Library (Oversize): The item is located in the Oversize section of the LAL Open Stacks, H-TML 4th floor.

The Open Stacks are available to the public whenever H-TML is open.

Tulane users can check out these items at the Check-Out Desk, 1st floor.

Non-Tulane users can consult these items in the library’s study spaces whenever H-TML is open.

Latin American Library (Reference): The item is located in the Reference section of the LAL Open Stacks on H-TML 4th floor. These items cannot circulate and can only be consulted within the library whenever H-TML is open.

Offsite Depository (Latin American Library): The item is located Tulane Libraries' Offsite Depository.

Tulane users can order items directly from the record in Library Search. Click here for instructions.

Non-Tulane users must use the Offsite Request Form.

You will receive an email notification when your book is ready to pick up at the Check-Out Desk, H-TML 1st floor. Tulane users can check out these items; non-Tulane users can consult these items in H-TML.

Offsite Depository (Latin American Library newspapers): Newspapers located at the Offsite Depository must be consulted in the LAL reading room during office hours. Contact LAL@tulane.edu to request materials and set up an appointment.
Latin American Library (Rare Books) / (Rare Oversize) / (Rare Miniature) / (Rare Pamphlets) / (Rare Newspapers) / (Rare): The item forms part of the LAL Special Collections and can only be retrieved by LAL staff. You can consult rare materials in the LAL reading room during office hours by appointment only. Email LAL@tulane.edu to set up an appointment. Latin American Library (Closed Stacks): The item is located in Closed Stacks and can only be retrieved by LAL staff during office hours. Depending on the condition of the item, you may be permitted to check it out. Otherwise, you will have to consult it in the LAL reading room during office hours by appointment only. Email LAL@tulane.edu to set up a consultation. 

Not available - In Process: The item has recently arrived but has not yet been cataloged.

Not available - Loan: The item is checked out to another user. You have two options:

1. Place a recall, which requires the library user who has the book to return it in 10 days. Visit the Check-Out Desk on the 1st floor of H-TML. Library staff can manually place a recall on any checked-out book from there.

2. Order the item via Inter-Library Loan: https://illiad.tulane.edu. Allow 1-2 weeks for delivery.

Not available - Acquisition: The item has been ordered but has not yet arrived at the library. Email LAL@tulane.edu for assistance.

Check Holdings: If there is a call number following the location--which could be in Open Stacks, Offsite, Closed Stacks, Rare, etc.--the item is available at that call number.

If there is not a call number, it is likely the item has arrived to the library but has not yet been processed. In that case, email LAL@tulane.edu for assistance.

Howard-Tilton Stacks: Some materials relating to Latin America are located in H-TML Open Stacks, floors 1-6. Consult the stacks location guides by the elevators to find the call number ranges on each floor.

Howard-Tilton Media Services (Microforms)/ Howard-Tilton Media Services (CD/ DVD): LAL microforms, CDs, and DVDs are located in Media Services, H-TML 6th floor. Email mediaservices@tulane.edu for assistance.
