Find Oral Histories

The Hogan Archive Oral History finding aid lists the oral histories on file with the Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz at Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC). They are arranged in alphabetical order by name of interviewee. Most of the oral history interviews have transcripts, digests, or notes available.

Through collaboration with Music Rising at Tulane University, many Hogan Archive Oral Histories are now streaming online via the Music Rising website. If there is a transcript or digest available for an interview, it is a searchable PDF and available on the Music Rising website.

For assistance, email specialcollections@tulane.edu.

Rare Books
Rare books held by Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC) can be found using Library Search. Please note that newer acquisitions may still be in process and not yet listed in the catalog. For inquiries about uncatalogued books, contact specialcollections@tulane.edu

Maps
TUSC's map holdings span from 1513 to the present, including about 400 maps dating from before 1799. Highlights include early maps of North America and the Louisiana territory. Louisiana maps feature state and regional topography, vegetation zones, natural resources, parish and highway maps, and plans of New Orleans tracing the city’s development since 1718. The collection also includes Mississippi River Commission surveys and U.S. Coast Survey charts of the Gulf of Mexico.

Selections of Louisiana maps from 1513–1900 are digitized and available via the Tulane University Digital Library.

Map collections can be searched using the inventories below:

Historical Newspapers
TUSC holds Louisiana newspapers dating from 1800 to the present. Historical newspapers can be found using Library Search.

  • Older newspapers are stored offsite and require two business days for retrieval.
  • Newspapers with current subscriptions are housed onsite.
  • Many current newspapers are also available in the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library.

For digitized and microfilm newspapers, consult the Tulane University Libraries' “News and Newspapers Library Guide.” It includes tabs for both current and historical Louisiana newspapers.

Many historical Louisiana newspapers have been digitized through the Louisiana Newspaper Project at LSU-Baton Rouge, which identified and cataloged over 1,700 titles dating as far back as 1794.

Serials
TUSC preserves serials and magazines reflecting a wide range of its collecting areas. They are stored onsite and searchable through Library Search.

University Archives Publications
Printed materials collected by University Archives—including pamphlets, course catalogs, university histories, presidential speeches, commencement addresses, and yearbooks—can be found in Library Search by adding "Tulane University" to a keyword search.

Dissertations and Theses
The University Archives holds bound print copies of Honors, master's theses, and Doctoral dissertations, all cataloged in Library Search.

  • Most Honors and master’s theses are only available in paper and can be viewed in the TUSC reading room by appointment.
  • Doctoral dissertations written before 1956 are available in paper only, while most post-1956 dissertations are also available digitally through Scholarship at Tulane and ProQuest’s Dissertations and Theses database.
  • Tulane affiliates can download these dissertations at no charge. Non-affiliates may purchase copies through ProQuest Dissertation Express.
  • More information is available in the Theses and Dissertations Library Guide.
