limited edition science fiction and fantasy printer and publisher

Now open for research: Newly published archival collection documents the creative, operational, and production history of Cheap Street Press, an internationally recognized limited edition science fiction and fantasy printer and publisher.

Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC) is pleased to announce that the Cheap Street Press Collection LaRC-1179 is now open for public research.

The archival collection documents the creative, operational, and production history of Cheap Street Press, a fine press publishing house based in New Castle, Virginia and internationally recognized for its letterpress printed, limited edition science fiction and fantasy works.

The Cheap Street Press Collection spans the full breadth of George and Jan O’Nale’s publishing activities, including correspondence with authors, type founders, binders, bookmakers, suppliers and literary agents; author manuscripts; production logs ephemera; photographs; printed material; and publication records ranging in date from 1980 to 2002.

The collection also preserves Japanese and European paper sample books and booklets; book binding cloth and leather sample books; Cheap Street Press published editions; proofs; and paper and zincographs used in book production.

The collection was arranged and described by archivist Kure Croker with assistance from Tulane undergraduate student Mable Windham. The Cheap Street Press Collection significantly strengthens Tulane’s holdings in book arts, fine press printing, and science fiction materials. They offer printers, book artists, and researchers a rare insight into the methods, materials, and creative decisions that shaped this small but influential fine press and its publishing legacy.
