On Monday, October 2, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Central Time, Melissa A. Weber, curator of Tulane University Special Collections’ Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz, will give an online presentation, “Jivin' with Dr. Daddy-O: Race, Radio and Representing Black in Jim Crow New Orleans.” The talk, presented as part of American Archives Month in October, is free and open to the public.

Hogan Archive acquires Scott Jordan interview collection

The Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz, a unit of Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC), has recently acquired an archival collection of audio cassette and micro-cassette recordings of interviews, circa 1993-2008, with New Orleans and Louisiana musicians and other public figures and celebrities. The interviews were conducted by writer Scott Jordan, whose work in journalism covered Louisiana music, arts, and culture for nearly three decades.

The Acquisition of Julia Dorn’s The Legend of the Dew Drop Inn Documentary

Last year, filmmaker Julia Dorn donated 43 mini DV tapes of video interviews she conducted for her unfinished documentary, The Legend of The Dew Drop Inn, to the Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz. The unfinished film intended to incorporate oral histories to detail the historical, social, and cultural impact of the Dew Drop Inn, one of the foremost Black entertainment venues of pre-integration New Orleans during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.

Newly processed collection of pianist Don Ewell highlights traditional New Orleans jazz

Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC) has completed the processing of the Don Ewell collection, both improving its research discoverability and ensuring long-term preservation. The collection contains materials both related to and amassed by pianist Don Ewell, including correspondence, photographs, clippings, audiovisual media, sheet music, posters, books, and ephemera ranging 1894 – 2004, with the bulk pertaining to the 1950s through the 1970s.

The exhibition features archival materials and audio recordings related to the first 10 years of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, also known as Jazz Fest.
